Long Time, No See

Hello everyone! It’s been a while since I have posted on here and I apologize. These past two semesters have been really busy for me! I’ve tried many new vegan restaurants, recipes, and products that I’m excited to share with all of you! My last final is next Wednesday and then I will be posting on here regularly. (:

<3Jamie

This is Souley Vegan. Yes, vegan soul food exists and it is uh-maz-ing. They’re located in Oakland, CA and if you ever go to shows at the Oakland Metro, this restaurant is literally around the corner. It’s really cute inside and they typically have a TV in the corner with Soul Train always playing on it. I’ve been switching my order up every time but I have landed on one I might have to stick with: their Southern Fried Minis. I don’t know too much about what it actually is. The menu states that it’s a “rare breed of tofu, deep fried in special batter.” All I know is that I love it. They also serve it with several different sauces: ketchup, BBQ sauce, and tartar sauce. The BBQ sauce is my personal favorite. I seriously want a bottle of it to take home. I also get a side of their potato salad (which is to die for) and their sweet potato fries. I wish I could order the whole menu sometimes…
They also have tons of sweets! I’ve seen their cupcakes a few times but the last time I was there, there was also cookies and cake. The cupcakes are different combinations of strawberry, lemon, chocolate, and vanilla and same with the cakes. I took home a slice of chocolate cake, a chocolate cupcake with vanilla filling, a lemon cupcake with strawberry frosting, a chocolate chip cookie, and a oatmeal cookie with a cinnamon glaze. All amazing and I still can’t believe it’s all vegan!

Vegan Makeup
I honestly didn’t think it was going to be too hard to find 100% vegan/cruelty free makeup, but oh my gosh it is. The bright side is that it exists and that I am now incredibly excited.
I’ll list the brands that I adore so you can shop their entire site while also listing the specific makeup I am using.

Zuzu Luxe (http://www.gabrielcosmeticsinc.com/index.cfm?category=3) - I have been searching for a vegan, brown, liquid eyeliner for a very long time. So I bought theirs in Tuareg. I tried Urban Decay’s, but ultimately was not a fan. So I’m really excited to use this one! Their site also states that all of their products are vegan and gluten free so that’s also very exciting.

100% Pure (http://www.100percentpure.com/default.asp) - okay so this brand is amazing, their makeup is fruit pigmented. Like if you look at the list of ingredients, it’s a bunch of of fruit so the makeup actually smells fruity and everything. I bought their Fruit Pigmented Powder Blush in Pretty Naked which is like a Pink Nude color.

Fyrinnae (http://www.fyrinnae.com/) - Their site states that they “never test on animals (that would be silly. They don’t wear makeup), and there are no animal parts, such as carmine, silk, pearl, lanolin, beeswax, and tallow in our products” which I love. People kept raving about their eyelid primer (Pixie Epoxy) and I had to try it.

Eco Tools (http://www.ecotools.com/) - I learned that one of my makeup brushes was made of squirrel hair (like seriously? wtf?) and that another one was made of pony hair. So I knew those needed to change…quick. I have one of Eco Tools brushes (Retractable Kabuki Brush) already and loveeee it. So I ordered their Full Eye Shadow Brush as well. I also adore all of these companies’ mission statements/about us pages. Theirs states that their brushes are “100% cruelty-free, have incredibly soft bristles made of synthetic taklon and have handles made of bamboo and recycled aluminum ferrules.”

e.l.f. (http://www.eyeslipsface.com/) - They, and I quote, “do NOT test on animals or endorse such practices. Our products do not contain animal derived ingredients. Beeswax has been replaced by synthetic beeswax and lanolin has been by Bis-Digylceryl Polyacyladinpale-2. We currently support HSUS and are partners with PETA in the Caring Consumer Project.” Their products are incredibly cheap but that does not at all mean that the products themselves are cheaply made. I’ve used their stuff for years and love all of it. I did just order their “Mineral Eyeshadow Primer” as well as one of their makeup brushes (Studio Small Angled Brush.) UPDATE: I just bought their Glossy Gloss Lip Gloss, SPF 15 Conditioning Lip Balm, makeup setting spray, and one of their makeup bags. I HIGHLY recommend this company to vegans and non vegans.

These brands aren’t 100% vegan but they are cruelty free and have some vegan products:

Bare Escentuals (http://www.bareescentuals.com/) - do not be fooled like I was and buy their products, assuming they’re vegan. My READY blush, Close Call, has Carmine in it, which was incredibly saddening to me. BUT! I still use their Mineral Veil and Celestine Eye Shadow, knowing that they are vegan-friendly. All in all, I love their products, just read the ingredients list.

Urban Decay (http://www.urbandecay.com/) - when you go to their site, there’s a bar at the top and the first option is What’s New and under there is a Vegan option. After clicking that, you can see what of their products actually are vegan. I gave a sigh of relief when I saw that my Naked Skin “Weightless Ultra Definition Liquid Makeup” was under that list. (My shade is 2.0) It goes on so smoothly and feels so light, I sometimes forget I’m wearing it. But don’t let that fool you! It covers the redness and blemishes perfectly and evens out my skintone like no other.

5/12/14: This post requires some much-needed updating. I will address this within the next week.

Leather.
It has become so integrated into our every day lives that we sometimes forget what it truly is. I was trying on shoes at a store one day and the associate helping me brought me a pair of shoes and he felt the need to point out that it was lined with lambskin. Lambskin. It sounded so vulgar to me, like I instantly pictured a little lamb and had no desire to try on these shoes. But leather? That doesn’t sound too bad, right? Cows don’t come to mind instantly when the word leather is spoken. If anything, it symbolizes quality pieces. Shoes, wallets, handbags, belts, your favorite pair of boots, your leather jacket…you read “genuine leather” and know that you’re getting your money’s worth. I mean, that’s how I felt for the longest time. I constantly complained about how giving up leather was going to be too hard. “I’m not going to find stylish, comfortable vegan shoes” Well, you know what, I had never looked it up until I typed “vegan shoes” in on Google one day. Among the first couple of links I found this:
http://www.vrg.org/nutshell/leather.php
A godsend, the answer to my problem. I had used vrg (The Vegetarian Resource Group) for a research paper, but I had somehow missed this gem. The list is literally massive but I’ll point out some of my favorites:

Alternative Outfitters - www.alternativeoutfitters.com
I actually bought Patrik’s first vegan wallet from this website. He was using some kind of sad looking Velcro wallet before and he needed an upgrade. It even has a little “V” embossed in the corner. My friend got a great pair of flats from here as well. They sell non-leather footwear, handbags, accessories (including vegan watches and luggage tags), makeup, and so much more.

VeganEssentials – www.veganessentials.com
I’ve honestly been shopping on this website for a while, but always food. Vegan mozzarella for mozzarella sticks, vegan marshmallows (for rice krispies treats), vegan chocolates (for Valentine’s Day) but I did just discover their nonfood items.

MooShoes – www.mooshoes.com
Oh my goodness, I love their shoes. So cute! I don’t own any yet, but I will soon. Vrg also mentions that they sell bags, wallets, belts, and faux leather jackets.

Mink - http://www.minkshoes.com/mink_collection.html
Aside from the fact that the name is a little misleading, (founder’s last name was Mink, so they get a freebie on this one) I really love some of their sandals and I see them on many other vegan websites.

Vegan Wares - www.veganwares.com
Although their womens shoes are not that attractive, I did find the only pair of 12-eye vegan boots for Patrik here. Who knew 8-eye boots were so popular… http://www.veganwares.com/shop/max-12-collage/

As a sidenote, vegan shoes are not that hard to find even at the stores by your house. I’m addicted to DSW and I was surprised to find that a lot of the shoes I loved were made out of faux leather.
So don’t shy away from veganism because of that Michael Kors handbag or those Tory Burch flats, because there are alternatives out there that are just as fashionable but cruelty-free.

So this is zpizza. They have a tonnnn of locations all over the country. (Which you can explore here: http://www.zpizza.com/locations/)
I personally always go to the Fremont one. Not all of their pizzas are vegan, but they have a pizza called the Berkeley Vegan and it is pure bliss.
It’s topped with marinara sauce, vegan cheese (Daiya to be specific), veggie burger crumbles (kinda tastes like sausage), zucchini, tomatoes, mushrooms, red onions, and bell peppers.
Patrik and I have had our fair share of vegan pizzas but this one takes the cake. They even made us a heart shape one for valentine’s day! Just talking about this pizza is making me crave it, maybe I’ll go get one later today.
